Hyphen
Double bass player-composer Nicolas Rombouts and dancer-choreographer Charlotte Vanden Eynde met in 2015, when they were invited to present a public improvisation together. At the time, this revealed a special synergy, based on the integrity of the relationship that both maintain with their ‘instrument’, which allows them to stay as close to themselves as possible. They work intuitively, creating spontaneously, but always maintaining full mental control. For Nicolas Rombouts, playing music is instant composing. For Charlotte Vanden Eynde, dancing is thinking. Like the two hemispheres of a single brain, they can improvise and think together, while functioning autonomously.
In Hyphen – not coincidentally, a linguistic device for linking compound words –, dance and music are equal, the two physical presences are balanced. A hyphen marks both a distance and a relation through which something new arises, encompassing both parts. Together, Vanden Eynde and Rombouts look for tipping points, where music can become movement and movement music.
Exploring the essence of dance and music, Hyphen reveals the power ánd vulnerability of being present and acting in the here and now.
